Lake Oconee Fishing Info

Lake Oconee is a reservoir in Central Georgia, created in the year 1979. It is the second largest water body in the State. The Georgia Power Company maintains and manages the Lake and as such the waters are very clean.

Situated in between Atlanta and Augusta, this beautiful lake is the best destination for those who are looking to relocate or retire in the Southeast of United States. The weather near the Lake is pleasant with colorful seasonal changes.

The entire area is called as the Lake Country because of the presence of Lake Oconee and its sister Lake – the Sinclair. Georgia Power Company created both the lakes after the construction of the Wallace Dam on the Oconee River.

Lake Oconee has around 374 miles of shoreline and covers around 19,000 acres. The length of Lake Oconee is about 32 km. On average, it is 21 feet deep and seems to be a little deeper near the dam.
The Lake is the prime location for fishing. Some of the fishes here include the Channel Catfish, Blue Catfish, Flathead Catfish, Striped Bass, Largemouth Bass, Hybrid Striped Bass, Crappie and White Bullhead.

Anglers use many fishing techniques. Spinner baits, Crank baits, jig-head worms, and jerk baits are few popular techniques employed for fishing Largemouth bass. Rooster tails, small crank baits, and curly tail grubs are best for White Bass. Minnows and jigs are the best techniques for fishing Crappie.

Apart from fishing, water-skiing, swimming, and boating are the other attractive reasons for people to visit Lake Oconee.

LICENSE INFORMATION

Obtaining a license depends on your age, your choice of activities, and the duration of the license you require. License fee differs for the residents of Georgia and the non-residents. There are both short-term and lifetime licenses available. In case of a short-term license, you just need a day’s approval for carrying out both fishing and hunting. However, if you need to extend the license for a few more days, then you will need to pay a little extra.
Children of age 15 or below can enjoy fishing for free. However, adults who wish to fish in the saltwater will require a Saltwater Information Permit (SIP). It is valid only for a single season after which you will need to obtain a new SIP. Mountain Trout Fishing also requires Trout Licence apart from the basic requisite. The license fee is as follows:
For Residents:

  • Annually – $15
  • Per Day – $5 and for every additional day – $1

For Non-Residents:
