This beautiful lake is a reservoir on the Etowah River in Georgia’s North-western Countryside. The reservoir lies mostly in Barlow County and the Cherokee County. The nearest city to the Lake is Cartersville.
On the North of the Lake where a peninsula is naturally formed between the two arms of the Lake is the Red Top Mountain State Park. Named for its iron-rich Red Top Mountains, this 1,776-acre park lies on this peninsula that juts from the northern side into the lake.
Interstate 75 and US Highway 41 pass along the Lake on its Southern and Western side respectively. Interestingly, although Lake Allatoona is its official name, the locals and the officials hardly use this name while referring to it!

Some of the fish species found in abundance here include the Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Guadalupe bass, Spotted Bass, White Bass, Striped bass, Blue Catfish, Flathead Catfish, Yellow Bullhead, Rainbow Trout, white & black Crappie, Hybrid Sunfish, Warmouth, Walleye, and Red drum.
Fishing is allowed in the lake. Anglers can make use of the eight privately-owned marinas located here, which are adequately stocked with fuel, storage space, boat rentals, and repairs. There are also a lot of conveniences and bait and tackle stores for any last-minute purchases.
Anglers can bring their own boats or even rent from here. Fifteen boat ramps across the lake’s shoreline are operated for free by the US Army of Corps Engineers. There is ample parking space for anglers, campers, and picnickers who can park their vehicles and spend a wholesome day near the waterbody.
There are also seven camping sites maintained by the Corps Engineers and it is a huge hit with the ninety-two million people has visited the Lake only between 2006 and 2010! There are provisions for visitors to hire rooms even. Hotels and restaurants also dot the lake’s shore, servicing the visitors who come here for the sheer beauty of the place!
Anglers sixteen years of age and above must sport a valid Georgia State fishing license in their possession while fishing in either fresh or salt water. In case the license has been obtained online or through the telephone, a temporary authorization number may also be sufficient until the time a physical copy is received and/or printed. The officers may also want to additionally verify the angler’s photo identification at the time of checking the license. It is important to note that licenses will not be issued without quoting the official US Social Security Number.

April and May are the official spawning period with a lot of Bass population moving towards the shoreline, close to the natural habitat near the Allatoona Creek area. Fishes in this season can be found in close proximity to fallen trees and logs. Spring and fall are the best seasons to fish in the shallow waters on the Lake. With the onset of winter, the fish again moves into the deeper parts of the lake.
