Kaena Point is famous for many activities besides fishing, like hiking, recreational water sports, and cycling. The dune ecosystem in this area is the only one of its kind that still remains undisturbed. This is one of the oldest shorelines preferred by the fishermen of Hawaii. The census-designated towns of Wainae, Makaha are all located 7 to 10 miles away from Kaena Point. The closest International Airport is the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, in Honolulu which is around 32 miles from the Kaena Point State Park.
For those who are curious to try shoreline fishing, this is a wonderful place to try (bringing your best fish finder might be overkill, but grabbing your best polarized sunglasses and some good fishing line is not). You also get to enjoy a quiet beachside vacation with your family. This place is home to some unique species of plants which thrive here due to the dune ecosystem. If you love snorkeling this is one of the best spots to visit. You get to watch several species of marine animals besides the huge variety of fish. Reef triggerfish which is the state fish of Hawaii is available in abundance at the shoreline.
Close to the beach, you would find showers and washrooms. It is easy to find a parking space near the beach. There are no drinking water fountains available. Therefore carry food and drinking water. Small clinics can be found in the nearby census-designated settlements which you can locate on your way.
Recreational saltwater fishing in Hawaii doesn’t call for any license. Therefore for fishing at Kaena Point you do not need a separate fishing license. But a vehicle permit is required to enter the Kaena Point Natural reserve Area. You can apply permits for each year in advance. There are upper caps on the number of permits issued in a year. Check the website of Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of State Parks for updates regarding the issue of permits. You can apply for the permit online or visit the Oahu State Parks office to get one.
Road closure might be announced due to weather and other factors. Whether you are visiting the shoreline for fishing or for any other activities travel with a valid vehicle permit. Follow the beach usage policies issued based on the high and low tide activities observed. This is a restricted reserve area where pets are not allowed. Cars are allowed only to the Camp Erdman area. After this you would have to hike till Kaena Point which is a 2.5-mile hike from the spot. This is a step taken to preserve the automobile exhaust based pollution which can be hazardous for the wildlife in the area.

Kaena Point is characterized by its all year warm weather. It is open all throughout the year. But check for the announcement of seasonal closures in advance. Summers can get really hot. If you would like to spot some humpback whales visit this spot during the winters. It is their breeding season. Schools of the mahi-mahi are easy to spot in this shoreline. This is known to be one of the tastiest finds from the Hawaiian shoreline. Always look out for local signboards that mark the areas that are off-limits for fishing.
