Riggs Flat Lake Fishing Info

Riggs Flat Lake, located on Mt. Graham, spreads across 11 acres. It is at the end of the popular Swift Trail or the Arizona State Route 366. You cross a picturesque mountain road to reach this spot. The closest town is Safford, which is 40 miles away from the spot. This is where you will find the closest hospital as well. Even if you are not into fishing, the stunning views of the lake and the surrounding woods situated on the top of the mountain is something you cannot miss. Fall colors here are unique. From camping to hiking through the mountain trails to skiing and rock climbing, there is so much that Mt. Graham offers. You can also enjoy the views of the Galiuro Mountains on taking a short drive from the camp sites near the lake.

Riggs Flat Campground on its own has several restrictions like a maximum cap on the number of RV’s and people per site. Check the updated camping fees and RV entry fee before you plan your trip. You can stay for a maximum of 14 days at a stretch. Only 2 RV’s and a total of not more than 10 campers can pitch at one site. There are vaulted washrooms available on the camp sites. If you are taking your camper or RV, choose one that is 22ft or shorter in length. The switchbacks and steep road conditions are not favorable for longer trailers.

If you are going fishing, then you can only take single-motor boats. The algae blooms can make it difficult to find fish if you prefer sticking with the shore. Take a motor boat (or bring one with a trolling motor), bring a fish finder (check our fish finder reviews if you need a new one) and go deeper to catch the best ones. However, the pace can be pretty slow on this lake. Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout and Brook Trout are the most common ones that you can find in the Lake. Salmon eggs, cheese and corn are some of the most popularly recommended baits in this lake.

SEASON INFORMATION

As the lake sits at an altitude of more than 8,600 feet, avoid going there during the winters. The months from May through October are ideal for fishing both during the day time and at night. The campgrounds are open even during the closing week of April and early November. During peak summers you can see the whole valley bursting into different shades of green. This is also the ideal time for anglers looking out for Brook Trout. If you prefer the Brown Trout, then fall is the season when you should try your luck because it then when the winter feeding starts. Besides fishing, the campgrounds located around the lake are also popular tourist attractions.

Hook / Weight Restrictions

There’s a small campground here, but RV access is limited to vehicles less than 22 feet in length, due to the switchback road that leads to the site.
