Biggest Threadfin Salmon session to date! My mate Jono and I had an awesome night out tonight on the Brissie river while the rest of Brisbane were snoring in bed! Like wow! What an awesome night! 5 threadies all up with the largest tagged 94cm released.
We arrived at the ramp at 8pm. Knowing the tide prediction was low at 9:35pm we were in no rush. After using the fish finder to find bait and then a bit of cast netting we were only able to get a few herrings. Prawns were nowhere to be found! Obviously low tide is very hard to find live bait. After a bit of effort, we gave up and decided to head for our secret bait spot. It produced; coughing up a dozen nice sized herrings.
We camped out at our usual spot with Jono landing his first threadie for the night coming in at 84cm. We sat for a few hours more until the tide began to slow. Knowing this was the prime time to get them we pulled anchor and set off in search of more bait. It was a bit of an effort but we tried hard, throwing castnets further into the bait zones. Eventually, we got a further 6 or so herrings.
I had noticed a section across the river from where we normally fish. It was unusually bright tonight. We agreed to give it a go as our spot had only produced one fish the whole night. Within 5mins of arriving my rod went off! Big head shakes and massive run I knew I was onto another nice threadie. After an epic battle, I landed a 94cm threadie. I believed it is to be my Pb but will need to confirm. Noticing it had a tag on its back I quickly recorded the number and released it to fight another day. Shortly after Jono’s rod went off again! While I was helping him with his rod one of mines went off too! Double hook up! Unfortunately after a long battle Jono pulled in another 84cm specimen while I pulled in a massive stingray. 😭
It was already 11:30pm but knowing this was prime fish feeding time we again pulled the anchor in search of more livies. It was unbelievably hard! We tried everywhere without any luck! Eventually, I made the brave decision to try castnet at places I have never tried before. Thank God there were no snags! We managed another 5 herrings.
Once again on arrival of our previous spot, my rod went off with minutes of dropping a livie in. Jono was still re-rigging his rod from a bust off earlier. I had only just landed this one; my other rod went off! Leaving my rod and the fish still jumping on the floor I jumped onto my 2nd rod to land yet another threadie 83cm and 74cm consecutively. These two I decided to keep. One for my family and the other for my parents.
We finished up 1:30pm with our last bait. All happy and smiles on the way home wondering what busted off Jono’s rod earlier
