Two mates and I headed off to Hope Island on the Gold Coast kayaking this evening. I was pretty tired after work but we haven’t fished as a group for a while and since everyone was keen I too threw my hat into the ring!
We got to the launch spot a little shy of 8 pm. I know hey, it took me 2hrs to get to the water lol. On finally climbing into my kayak I followed the other two to their regular spot. These waters are normally teaming with fish! To my surprise, I found it extremely hard to get a bite! There were a few pickers here and there but the hit and run freight trains just weren’t playing ball! My other mates started pulling in some nice fish including a 40+cm. I was feeling worried… I might actually get outfished tonight! And THAT doesn’t happen very regularly.
I left the other two to their spot and paddled to mine. I thought to myself, now let’s get ready for the action! Feeling a hot session was about to start I wore on my GoPro and got the landing net ready. I was actually getting ready to catch some bream! However, as I was about to cast I couldn’t help noticing these huge swirls near my kayak! I decided to give it ago see if they’ll take chicken. To my surprise they did! Well… I actually worked it like a lure lol. Line screamed off my reel as I lit up the waters around me and started the camera rolling. This thing was swimming round and round my kayak. With only 12lb leader and 15lb braid I thought my chances of pulling it in was slim but hey! I did it! My personal PB big eye trevally came in at 58cm ????
I managed to pull in a few more bream during the session as well as a quick fight with What I believe was an even bigger trevally However it found the weakness in my knots and snapped me off at the leader ????
Was an awesome night out with mates who love their fishing! To the trevally…. I’ll be back!!!!
