The Chipeta Lake looks calm and scenic surrounded by splendid natural scenes of the San Juan mountain. It is one of the famous fishing destinations of Colorado, and it has a comparatively low elevation and can that is why people easily reach this place using a car. It is located 299 miles from Denver and gets its water from the Uncompahgre River in Montrose.
It is one of the very few fishing spots accessible by wheelchair and gives fishing opportunities for the physically impaired. A trail of gravel goes along the shore of the lake, and it narrows on the south end of the lake where weeds block the water. This spot is where a fisher can get a good catch, and there are few benches on the shore where one can comfortably shore fish.
The waters have something to offer for everyone and rarely do fishers return disappointed from here. The lake has a vast stock of trouts and few warm-water species, thus making it an excellent place for family fishing. Bluegills and rainbow trouts are in abundance, and decent pan fishing can be done here. Fishers usually use fish eggs, insects, worms, crayfish and minnows as bait here. Average catches are of 6 inches, and lucky anglers get 8-10 inches which taste very good.
Apart from shore fishing, boat fishing is allowed using small portable boats and kayaks. The lake fishing area consists of three ponds, and all the three are stocked with catchable-sized trout. The lake is crowded during weekends and on Saturday’s professional guidance is provided for fishing together with the supply of fishing rods and reel outfits. The shallow waters and unsteep shores make this the best place for kids to learn fishing. The lake is great for warm as well as cold water fishing and to increase your changes of finding schooled fish is to use a good fish finder. These can be attached to your kayak or the use of portable fish finders is possible from the shore.
Good news is that there are no fishing regulations here on the maximum limit one can catch. Fishing is allowed one hour before sunrise and one hour after sunset. Fishers should possess a valid Colorado fishing license and must be above 16 years of age. Only single rod can be used at a one point of time. However, while using trotlines and jugs exclusively, a second rod is allowed with proper stamping.

The best time to visit the lake and get a good catch is during spring and fall. The Rotary Club of Montrose hosts annual fishing events for kids during May month which are attended by families. For this purpose, the park stocks small varieties for pan fishing and large catches as well. The best catch will be during the early hours of a day in September when the moon illumination is best. Evening fishing is recommended during summer when warm water fish such as catfish, bass, and sunfish unhide from the deep waters and come to the surface. The lake is stocked with self-sustaining species like largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish from December to January. During day time the catches would be primarily smallies, largemouth bass, and rainbow trout.
