Lake Maxinkuckee Fishing Info

Lake Maxinkuckee lies in the Marshall County in Indiana, USA. The lake is the second-largest natural lake in Indiana. The water body covers an area of 1,864 acres. The shoreline shares borders with the Town of Culver at the northwestern region. The lake has a depth of about 27 m. Maxinkuckee means ‘big stone country’ obtained from the Potawatomi word called Mog-sin-ke-ki. The Miami Indians and Potawatomi were the first groups to stay near the lake. Tourist and locals take part in various activities like ice fishing on the lake (probably a good idea to bring your best fish finder along).

Many types of fishes live in this lake like the bass and walleye. The lake has the best walleye catch in this area. Bluegill and yellow perch are also quite popular. The other types of fishes in the lake are redear sunfish and black crappie.

Ice fishing gives a good catch during winter. Be ready with all the necessary equipment for fishing in the cold. Summer fishing from boats and kayaks (if you’re looking for a decent kayak, have a look at our fishing kayak reviews) is pretty fun too. Fly-fishing helps to catch huge basses found in the lake.

Boating, waterskiing, sailing and swimming are other activities here. With a max. depth of 88 feet, the lake is pretty good for scuba diving too. Tourists also like to hike around the lake, enjoying the beauty.

Biking is the best way to view the Lake and the town of Culver. The 10-mile ride around Lake Maxinkuckee takes the bikers through a cover of maple trees.

SEASON INFORMATION

The best time for fishing is from 1:00 – 3:30 am and 2:00 – 4:00 pm. Fishes are visible in the shallow areas of the channels or bays during spring. In this season, the southeast or eastern region of the lake is best for fishing. In the remaining seasons, fishes move deeper to weed-lines, drop-offs and main humps. Ice fishing gives good results to fishers who brace the cold winters. Compared to the cold season, the summers provide a good harvest. The warm waters are the breeding area for bass and other species. Fall is the best season for boat fishing. The lake site is busy with anglers during this time of the year. Grab your favorite bait caster or spinning reel (we did a good comparison of the best Shimano spinning reels if you’re interested), some heavy-duty fishing line, and a good set of polarized sunglasses, and enjoy a day out fishing!
