The Venice Pier is located in the Venice District of Los Angeles. The pier was built in 1963 and is just over 1,600 feet long. The old pier was closed and restored in 1997 after falling apart in the 1980s.
The newly restored pier is entirely accessible for all people and features overhead lighting, benches, fish-cleaning stations, and individual bays for fishing and wheelchair access. The dock has a circular end with a 120-foot diameter.
The surface of the pier is cement, and the rails are 41 inches high. The pier is managed by Los Angeles’ Department of Park and Recreation and is open from 06:00 am to midnight. On bright days, you’ll be able to see the beautiful Santa Monica mountains.
The Venice Pier is a favorite fishing spot for locals and tourists. Next to the pier is a public parking lot that charges a flat rate. This pier is not to be confused with the Venice Pier in Florida, which is also a popular fishing location.
The most common fish caught from the Venice fishing pier include halibut, perch, mackerel, white sea bass, leopard shark, tiger shark, and stingrays. If you catch black sea bass, you have to return it to the ocean as it is endangered. You can also donate it to The Heal the Bay Aquarium located nearby.
If you are an experienced angler or if you fish at the end of the pier where the water is deeper, you may be able to catch fish like barracuda or yellowtail.
If you want to eat the fish you catch at the Venice Pier, consult the California Office of Environmental Health Hazards’ list of fish that are safe to eat. If there is mercury contamination or some other hazard, there will be signs posted on the pier.
Never eat barred sand bass, white and black croaker, or barracuda that you catch from the Venice Pier.
If you are older than sixteen and you catch fish in the state of California, you need to obtain a fishing license from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. When you fish from a public pier, however, you don’t need a fishing license.
Since there are no licensing requirements for fishing from the Venice Fishing Pier, it is one of the favorite fishing spots in the area. You may not, however, hook a fish from the pier before moving to land to reel in the fish.

Every month is suitable for pier fishing. June, July, August, and September are great months for fishing as species such as tuna and yellowtail amberjack swim closer to the shore. During January, February, and March, you can catch white seabass, halibut, and blue perch.
March is typically the month when rockfish become active. During the last three months of the year, the weather in this area may still be relatively pleasant, and you will be able to fish for barracuda, halibut, white seabass, and rockfish, including lingcod.
