Cave Lake is located at the Cave Lake State Park. The park occupies vast 4000 acres in the Schell Creek range, near Humboldt National Forest, White Pine Country, Nevada. It is just 4 hours drive from Las Vegas and is famous for Hiking and fishing.
The park has ample facilities for camping and picnicking. Basic amenities like showers and accommodation are excellent. Besides Nature study and Boat launch are added attractions. In a thirty days window, camping is allowed up to a maximum of seven days here. Camping reservations are on first-cum, first-serve basis.
The Lake occupies 32 acres. A dam was constructed in the area in the year 1932 for mining purposes. This created the Cave Lake. Rainbow and brown trout which have high potential to grow into large fishes are stocked for the anglers. During winter anglers throng Cave Lake for ice fishing. The State regulates ice fishing rules. Holes drilled in ice cannot be more than 10 inches in diameter. Fishers prefer rods that are specifically designed for ice fishing, and might bring a fish finder (check our ice fishing fish finder reviews for more info). However, experienced anglers feel that any trout rod with short and the blank handle would be sufficient. Since Ice Fishing catches will be more at night, the fishers are advised to carry insulated boots, layered garments, and thermal undergarments.
Though the lake is not so huge, during the winter water of the lake freezes. The waters are clear and cool during summer. Anglers get good fly fishing opportunities here (better bring your best fishing line). When the waters are good in the dam, the holdover fish from previous years grow huge. The success rate is high for anglers during such years. Normally anglers can find larger fishes in the south end of the lake.
Crayfish are found in abundance in Cave Lake. Anglers catch them easily from shore. Hot dogs and bacon are used as baits. A minnow trap or net would be sufficient to get a lumpsum catch. Crayfish provides delicious camping food too. Cave lake provides ample scope for shore as well as boat fishing. Except during winter, the weather remains dry. However, the lake gets water from late noon thunderstorms. Naturally born brown trouts are seen throughout the lake and the park streams.
Fishing is permitted 24 hours in the lake. A fishing license is required. Motorized boats not exceeding the speed of 5MPH is allowed for fishing purposes. Maximum of 5 trout is allowed. Nevada state fishing regulations apply for fishing in Cave Lake. Anglers can buy the license at Ely. The requirement of a trout stamp is a must.
