These are found in huge numbers in freshwater lakes, river basins of tropical climate where the weather is around 75 to 82 Fahrenheit. They reside in rock belts, submerged wood, aqua vegetation and caves and where the current of the water is extremely slow. The species cannot tolerate unusually cold weather, and lots of them died in Florida during the year 2010 to 2011 when the region faced extreme winter.
